Quick Guide to Hydrangea Care and Nutrition: Lessons from Our Journey
Hydrangeas, like our Hydrangea ‘Limelight’, bring beauty to any garden. Based on our recent experience as of July 2025, here’s a concise guide to keep them thriving, especially near ‘Smaragd’ cedars.
Key Care Tips
• Watering: Provide 1-2 inches weekly, using mulch (2-3 inches) to retain moisture—crucial after our pruning stress.
• Pruning: Trim weak branches in late winter/early spring (not late June, as we did), as ‘Limelight’ blooms on new wood.
• Sunlight: Ensure 4-6 hours daily; our cedars’ shade may need managing.

Nutrition Essentials
• Fertilizer: Use a 20-20-20 (e.g., Miracle-Gro) for balanced growth, as we did on June 28, or 28-10-10 for acidity if yellowing persists. Apply every 1-2 weeks, diluted, around the drip line.
• Avoid Pitfalls: Skip alkaline additives like baking soda (our mistake), which raised pH and caused yellowing. Flush soil with water if needed.
• Timing: Feed from spring to early fall, halting now to prep for winter.
