At 638 Rue Pouliot, Laval, we recently experienced a fire incident on Saturday Feb 1, 2025 in our building that serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety awareness and vigilance.
The fire was caused by unattended candles left on a plastic table in a resident’s apartment.
Thankfully, due to the swift response of the fire department and the remarkable fire-resistant properties of our building's concrete structure, the fire was contained to a single room, preventing what could have been a much more devastating event.
​The attending firefighter even noted that in the building, the concrete structural design played a crucial role in limiting the spread of the blaze.

While we are relieved that no one was seriously injured and the damage was minimal, this incident underscores the critical need for every one of us to adopt proactive fire safety measures. Leaving candles unattended, especially on flammable surfaces, is an accident waiting to happen. A moment of inattention can lead to irreversible consequences.
Here are a few fire safety tips to keep in mind:
  • Never leave candles or open flames unattended. Always place them on sturdy, non-flammable surfaces.
  • Smoke Detectors: Never ever temper nor remove any smoke detectors installed in your unit.
  • Kitchen Safety: Never leave cooking unattended. Keep flammable items away from the stove.

There aren' t issues on dead batteries issue. 
There would be following reasons on why would trigger false alarms inside apartment units, as per our study. 
1, High Humidity and Smoke Detectors: High humidity can sometimes trigger false alarms in our smoke detectors. 
The dense moisture particles in humid air could be mistaken for smoke particles by the detector. 
In extreme cases, the air density can even scatter the light beam of a photoelectric sensor or cling onto the ions in an ionization chamber.
To keep air circulation inside our apartments and to maintain optimal smoke detector performance and to prevent false alarm alerts, we recommend our residents proceed the following:
  • Turn off humidifiers when not needed, or turn down water vapors.
  • Open windows periodically for fresh air circulation, in the unit.
2. Dust Buildup: A buildup of dust can also affect the performance of smoke alarms to trigger false alarms. 
To prevent this, we recommend our residents cleaning smoke detectors at least once a year using your vacuum brush attachment. 
Regular maintenance ensures that the sensors remain sensitive and accurate within units.
